To captivate the minds of a room full of middle school girls, who rarely keep their mouths shut, takes a real hero. This week's hero, Craig Jennings, is a music teacher who possesses all the qualities of a great teacher: creativity, humor, the drive to make a difference, and one quality that is easier to be heard than seen.
"He coaches us through everything and gives us good confidence, and make us sound great," said Linda Cohen of her music teach Craig Jennings.
Jennings, Director of The Bearettes, says he teaches people first. The Bearettes are a young female singing group at Albemarle County's Burley Middle School. Jennings spends many hours directing and the girls spend many hours practicing, both things that don't go unnoticed.
"We're never about beating another school. I think that's an ugly lesson to teach a student. It's more representation of their incredible hard work," said Jennings.
The success of The Bearettes starts with their willingness to work hard. The girls come in an additional three hours a week to rehearse, expanding on a passion they already posses. What Jennings adds is sharing of the history of music, and showing the girls how to stay involved with music.
"You don't have to sing like a brilliant recording artist to a enjoy yourself and express yourself passionately," said Jennings.
Giving and sharing in heroic proportions, that's truly beautiful music.
As always, if you know a hero, send Jen an email and you could see your hero featured on the CBS19 News at 6.
