A piece of fabric, a spool of thread, a string a rope, and a few people willing to donate their time is all it took to create Tote Bags for Children. The bags provide a basic need to serve a not-so-basic service.

Thanks to an idea from a local social worker, senior citizens at Charlottesville's Mary Williams Community Center are volunteering their time to help lighten the load foster children by making them tote bags for the transition from one home to another.

"To me, I think they should be happy, because they have something that somebody made and gave them," said Ida Knight.

Bags of all colors, fabrics, and sizes will soon be in the hands of foster children across central Virginia.

"It's something that's their own, and they keep their own things in it and it's special for them," said Dede Austin.

Not all the work is done at the Williams Community Center in Charlottesville. And if the group makes enough bags for the central Virginia region, they'll keep expanding.

"It's happening in their homes,. It's a beautiful thing, you don't see it but they just show up it's sort of magical really. Every bit of it is worth it, although we might not know the children, but I'm hoping and praying they appreciate it," said project organizer, Adam Williams.

This week's group of heroes is giving children a piece of themselves with every stitch. And if you would like to help, Tote Bags for Children meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at noon at the Mary William Community Center.
