For some people it's tough just to get to church on Sundays. However, that's not the case for Patricia Carter, who pays a visit to the Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church every night of the week.
Carter has planned a food drive for Saturday, May 15 to help feed the hungry in the Belmont neighborhood. The 'Mission: Not Impossible' food drive is just one many project Carter is involved with that help the needy. According to her, prayer makes all things possible.
"I tell ya, if I was to write a book it would take me a while to write a book on Patricia, because she does so much," said church volunteer, Dorothy Collier.
Collier, 80, has been volunteering at the United Methodist for over 20 years, and even she is inspired by Patricia Carter.
Carter comes in early on Sundays to help set up snacks before church service. On Monday and Tuesday, she can be found folding and organizing clothes at the church. On Thursdays, Carter lends her voice to, you guessed it, the church choir.
"Every day of the week, I come after work and check things after work to see if we got any clothes in... I just drop by to make sure we don't get overloaded," said Carter.
Carter takes on a full load to make sure the clothes closet and the food pantry are stocked with supplies. She claims she's just taking care of "little odds and ends", and doing God's work is what fuels her tireless commitment.
"I think of it as God's work, that I'm doing it for him, and also for the church. It gives me energy to see that I'm helping someone else that needed help," said Carter.
Whether it's a pantry or a closet, this week's hero finds the strength, courage and time to change the things she can.
