Pigs are Dina Brigish's passion. Twelve years ago, she left a career in fashion to help neglected and abused pot-bellied pigs find a safe place to call home.

"Pot-bellied pigs are a neglected species. The local SPCAs and humane societies don't take them in and a lot of the national sanctuaries also don't take them. There's really no place for them," Brigish said during CBS19's visit to her farm in Schuyler.

Brigish left a lucrative career in New York City's fashion industry to focus on rescuing animals while also promoting a vegan lifestyle. That focus turned into The White Pig, a bed and breakfast and animal sanctuary at Briar Creek Farm in Nelson County.

"A lot of people come here to visit with the pigs, and a lot of times this is the first time they've ever met a pig," she said. "They just delight in the time they spend with them and they're always surprised at how friendly the pigs are."

Proceeds from the all-vegan B&B help Brigish rescue all sorts of animals from rough conditions. Along with several pot-bellied pigs, she has a retired race horse, a pony, a few cats and The White Pig's newest addition, a dog named Barkley. Throughout the years, Brigish's labor of love has saved hundreds of pot-bellied pigs and other animals, which is why may people nominated her to be this week's hero.

"Every day I just try to give out as much positive energy and be the best person I can. If it's rescuing animals or educating the public to eat healthier, I hope that I helped somebody," she said.

These animals, once thin, neglected and abused, are now thriving on Brigish's farm, which has been recognized with a VegNews Veggie Award and a PETA Proggy Award.
