One local one is doing her part to help out at The Haven. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is featuring Carolyn George who is known for her smiling face and welcoming personality at The Haven day shelter in downtown Charlottesville.
Three days a week you can find Carolyn George at the welcome desk at The Haven in downtown Charlottesville.
“I answer the phone and if they need anything I will hand it to them,” said Carolyn George, Volunteer, The Haven.
She's responsible for making sure guests sign-in, have towels and toiletries for showers and have access to their personal belongings stored in bins.
“This is just a way that I feel that I can sort of make a little difference in somebody's life even if it's just a smile or just a warm welcome, just to put a little bit of sunshine in somebody's life,” said, George.
Not only is The Haven a place where guests can grab a hot meal and get cleaned up, George also helps folks on the computer with resumes and job applications.
I feel it's a real privilege for me to be able to interact with these people and hear their stories and it's a real eye opener. You realize just how fortunate we are and how hard these people work and how strong their spirits are and they're an inspiration,” said George.
George says even though people here might be down on their luck, she encourages them to not give up.
“I think that everybody deserves the right to dignity and everybody deserves to be cared for. They've just had some bad luck and everybody deserves a second chance,” said George.
That's the reason Carolyn George is working so hard at The Haven.
She wants to help guests get the resources they need to help them get back on their feet and have a fresh start in life.
