One Gordonsville woman is spending her time making a difference for children by sharing breakfast and friendship. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is featuring Deborah Koontz who volunteers as a breakfast buddy at Gordon Barbour Elementary School.
Once a week you can find 5th grader Rafael Madden and mentor Deborah Koontz walking through the breakfast line at Gordon Barbour Elementary. They've been breakfast buddies for two years.
“It's a wonderful feeling to be a part of something important in the community encouraging kids and just being a part of their lives and being a part of the school system and the family that's there,” said Deborah Koontz, Breakfast Buddy, Gordon Barbour Elementary.
Over a scone and some apples, the duo talk about school, homework and anything else that needs to be discussed.
“Some of the kids may have situations in their family where they really need more loving adults around them to encourage them. So, that's a real gift to be a part of that as well,” said Koontz.
“She's one of the friends that she can talk to me and I can express my feelings to her,” said Rafael Madden,” said Student, Gordon Barbour Elementary.
It's not all serious during the mentoring program. They also have a little fun and play board games before the morning bell.
Koontz says not only is the program beneficial for her student, it's also rewarding for her.
“I think the best part about it is that I’ve seen him grow in his comfort with other kids and with adults and also he's learning to mentor others,” said Koontz
Although, the duo only meets briefly over breakfast, Koontz is hopeful that those few minutes will help to make a difference for the rest of her student's life.
