A 17-year-old Madison County college student is juggling school work and organizing a 5K race. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19 Stephanie Satchell is featuring Emily Kohl. She just sponsored at race in her mother's name and raised nearly $2,000for the American Heart Association.

Emily kohl is a 17-year-old student at Piedmont Virginia Community College. When she's not studying for exams and working on homework, she's finding ways to give back specifically to the American Heart Association.

Her mother Ruth Kohl has a serious heart condition called cardio myopathy and was recently hospitalized at the UVa Medical Center.

“It's scary to not know if your mom is going to be around in another year or what surgery she may or may not have to have next. So, I was thinking about all those kids and all those families and friends. It's just generally being scared,” said Emily Kohl, Organizer, Run for Ruth 5K.

So, Emily organized a race in her mom’s name, "Run for Ruth 5K Benefit."

“I was so proud of Emily the way she selflessly organized this race and I could not believe how the community came together friends and family and it was all because of her,” said Ruth Kohl, Emily’s Mother.

From manning the registration table to lining everyone up at starting line, Emily handled all of the details.

“Everyone keeps asking me how I put together a 5K. I honestly don't know how I did it. I just started calling people and asking for help,” said Emily Kohl.

Emily's mother says her daughter always takes the initiative to help others and that why she calls Emily her hero even if her teenager doesn't agree.

“I don't think of myself as a hero. I think of myself as I did something good and I did something that will benefit other people and that's a good thing.

It’s a good thing that's raising awareness about heart conditions and money to help find a cure.

Emily is planning another race in the spring.
