Every other week, 73-year-old Geore Kuhlow has a standing appointment at Virginia Blood Services in Charlottesville. He started off years ago, donating whole blood, but has since become a platelet donor.
“I love doing it; I really enjoy doing it; I look forward to it,” said Kuhlow.
During the more than hour-long appointment, blood travels from the vein in his arm and into a machine which separates the platelets and then gives him back his red blood cells. This is time Kuhlow says he doesn’t mind spending if it means saving a life.
“Once I got involved with it, if I don’t do it, I feel bad,” said Kuhlow.
With each donation in the bag, Kuhlow can help as many as six people, especially cancer patients who need platelets for treatment.
“It doesn’t take anything but your time, but the rewards are great for other people as well as yourself, knowing that you’re trying to help somebody else,” said Kuhlow.
Kuhlow says even with 102 platelet donations, there’s still more he can do to make a difference and says he’ll continue being a donor as long as there is a need.
With Kuhlow’s 102nd donation, VNB says it’s possible that he’s helped as many as 300 people over the years.
