From helping with homework to offering her friendship, a college student is working hard to make a difference for children at the Boy's & Girl's Club in Madison County. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is featuring Shania Breckenridge.
Shania Breckenridge has been a part of the Madison County Boy's & Girl's Club for many years. She started as a member when she was child, then volunteered in her early teens and now she's part of the staff.
"I love kids, that's what I want to do when I get older," said Shania Breckenridge, Staff, Boy's & Girl's Club.
Although, Shania is a college student aspiring to be a nurse practitioner who works with young patients, she always has time to return to give back to the Boy's & Girl's Club.
"She's funny and she likes to mess around with the kids. She's always involved and she likes to play," said Gaines Swink, Member, Boy's & Girl's Club.
When Shania's not leading activities outside, you can catch her helping kids one-on-one with summer school assignments.
"Power hour is probably my favorite it helps us make sure that they get their homework done and kids that don't necessarily have help at home get the help that they need here." said Breckenridge.
She says one of the most rewarding parts is watching the the children progress.
"You can also see how they mature into good citizens and just knowing that you have an impact on them is a good feeling and it makes me come back every year," Breckenridge.
People who work with Shania say, there's something about her that just stands out.
"It's her personality. She is very bubbly and she just goes in there and she has this drive. She just comes here looking to help kids every day," said Corey Strother, Service Unit Director, Boy's & Girl's Club.
Although, she may only be a few years older than some of the kids in the program many says she's a hero for all that she's done for the kids and the club.
