Stephanie's Heroes: Stone-Robinson Elementary Students

December 10, 2012

One Albemarle County elementary school is full of heroes. Students, teachers, parents and staff are pulling together to help people in need for the holiday season.

From toys to food students and staff at Stone-Robinson Elementary are doing their part to make the holidays a little brighter for people in need.

"We realized that there are lots of children in our area who have everything they need and want but there are also lots of children who go without," said Sharon Wood, Volunteer Coordinator, Stone-Robinson Elementary School.

Stone-Robinson students are coordinating several different projects to help the community. They're reaching out to more than 50 families in need and they're starting with the giving tree.

"We ask them for three things that they want and three things that they need and it's amazing that most of the wants are snow boots or snow pants and the occasional bike. It's really things that we all take for granted," said Wood.

Students in the community service club raised money, shopped and are now also filling stockings to go along with the giving tree gifts.

"It's around the holidays. It's just like you. If you needed help, what would you want other people to do," said Lindsey Robertson, Community Service Club, Stone-Robinson Elementary School.

"It makes them happy and everybody needs to be happy," said Chris Kelly, Community Service Club, Stone-Robinson Elementary School.

The biggest donation event is called kids night out. It's an evening at the school filled with games, food and fun. Each child has to donate a bag of groceries to take part and all of the food will benefit area families.

" We picked like canned foods and a little bit of crackers and cereals," said Robertson.

They've been working hard making sure they have enough food, toys and presents to go around.

"They are little heroes. All of them are little heroes," said Wood.

They're giving back and helping other children and families have a happy holiday season.
