Stephanie's Heroes: Aerobic Dance Instructor

June 6, 2011

Three days a week for 30 years Pat Jones has been at the YMCA in Charlottesville teaching senior aerobic dance.

“They're just fun to be with. I love to dance, they love to dance and we just come and have a really good time. I don't think of myself as a hero. I think the heroes are the people that get up and go and do things," she said.

From weight lifting to dance moves, Jones knows how important it is to show seniors how to stay fit.

“It's just really important, especially as we, age that we stay fit and that we keep our aerobic exercise going because so often you just want to sit down because something hurts," she explained. "If you get up and keep going then everything feels better."

While the 50-and-up class might seem like all hard work, participants say they have fun while burning calories.

“It is a lot of fun, but it keeps me going,” remarked Silvia Lord.

Lord is 91. She's been taking Jones' class for 29 years and says she doesn't know what she would do without her instructor or this class.

“I feel that this has helped me be as old as I am. If you want to be old you want to feel good. So, I try to feel good,” she said.

Some students are new to the program and say it's helping them develop new friendships as well as better fitness habits.

“It makes you want to be here three mornings a week and if you don't come and you miss it you think 'ah I'm not gonna see my friends this morning,'” said Pat Shutts.

Because of Pat Jones these seniors are having experiences some people their age only dream about. She has stuck with this group for a long time teaching new routines and exchanging laughs and she plans to be there for many more years keeping these seniors on their toes.
