Stephanie's Heroes: Aide Saves Choking Student

April 11, 2011

Debra Edwards is an instructional aide at Thomas Jefferson Elementary school in Louisa County. Everyday she helps young students learn to read, however a few weeks ago she did more than just educate students, she saved the life of Thomas Fuller.

"I called his name, he didn't answer me. So I went over and touched him on his shoulder and he didn't respond," said Edwards. "I could look at his face and tell something was wrong."

Fuller said he had been eating candy, when he started to choke.

"I needed help, because it was candy in my throat. I didn't swallow it, didn't even chew it, and it was hard," he explained.

Edwards immediately stood Fuller up and patted him on the back. When that did not work she performed the Heimlich maneuver. The candy shot out of Fuller's mouth quickly.

"I wasn't thinking about doing it, I just did it and thank goodness it worked," said Edwards.

Now, the community is calling Edwards a hero, but she doesn't agree. She insists she only did what she was supposed to do.

"I think I'm just glad someone was there in the right place at the right time," she said.
