Stephanie's Heroes: Busy Brooms

November 7, 2011

From washing windows to vacuuming the rugs, Busy Brooms in Charlottesville is doing its part to lighten the load for women fighting cancer in Central Virginia.

“These women have so much on their plate. Helping with the cleaning is a great help and great idea,” said Busy Brooms owner AnnMarie Johne.

For the past year, Busy Brooms has been taking part in a non-profit campaign called Cleaning For a Reason. They're goal is to help patients focus on one thing, getting better. They say the last thing a women undergoing treatment should have to worry about is cleaning her home.

“We are a part of our environment and it's especially important when someone is sick and recovering that they are staying in a clean environment,” said Johne.

Busy Brooms makes sure toilets are scrubbed and counter tops are spotless.

“When you nourish your body you want to do it in a clean kitchen. If you take care of your body you want to do it in a clean bathroom,” said Johne.

While the folks at Busy Brooms realize regular doctor appointments and medications are a key part of cancer treatment, they say taking cleaning out of the equation is the least they can do to make a difference for patients.

“There's a big sigh of relief they just say 'oh thank you this is so great. Now I can sit down and read a book or do other things,'” said Johne.

It's for this reason many in the community call the Busy Brooms staff heroes. They can't change a cancer diagnosis, but they can make a patient's life at home a little more comfortable and a whole lot cleaner.

Busy Brooms is currently providing free cleaning services to six women in the area. So far, this year they have donated about 82 hours of service.
