Stephanie's Heroes: Cuts For A Cause

April 25, 2011

Alyssa Divers is a student at Central Elementary in Fluvanna County, a jazz dancer and a cancer patient.

When Salon DeShano owner Jacquie DeShano heard about the 9-year-old's fight with bone cancer she knew she had to do something, even if Divers was a complete stranger.

"I don't know a lot about her other than she's a child in need and has a family who's struggling to get her the help that she needs. I think when we have a community-based forum like Salon DeShano, it's incumbent upon anyone in this position to do what we can to bring forth a change," said the Palmyra salon owner.

Stylists will soon pull out their scissors to help shape that change, hosting a Cut-A-Thon on Sunday, May 1 to raise money for Divers and her family.

"It's more about providing just a little bit of breathing room for them while they can be in the hospital with the child; be there for her and help her through the treatments," DeShano said.

With donations starting at $25 a cut, they're hoping to raise $5,000 by day's end. The event will take place in the Salon DeShano parking lot at 202 Turkey Sag Trail in Palmyra.

Other community merchants will also be there to help raise money.
