He's not a teacher, but he's working hard to make sure your child has everything they need at school. From delivering supplies to setting up for graduation, Orange County maintenance worker, Darrell Hutchinson is going above and beyond to make a difference in the Orange County School system and he's this week's hero.
For the past 22 years, Darrell Hutchinson has been working in the maintenance department for Orange County Schools.
“You go from school to school,” said Darrell Hutchinson, Maintenance Worker, Orange County Public Schools.
From transporting documents to delivering supplies like paper towels and soap, he works hard to make sure students, teachers and staff have what they need.
“Mr. Hutchinson is what I would call an unsung hero of the school system. He's always on the job and he helps hold it together,” said Dough Arnold, Coordinator of Facilities and Maintenance and Schools.
Although, Hutchinson isn't in the classroom, he is playing a role in student's graduation.
He and the rest of the crew are preparing for commencement. They are lining up more than 400 chairs on the football field.
While making sure everything is perfect for the ceremony, he keeps a few things in mind.
“You just got to know to have a good attitude and always know the kids come first,” said Hutchinson.
“A lot of people don't understand working for a school how much goes on behind the scenes,” said Phyllis Smith, Nurse, Prospect Heights Middle School.
Smith says he's been a big help to her and the other school nurses across the county. Hutchinson separates medical supplies and makes sure they are taken to the right school.
“It can be a very trying job. He's pulled in a lot of different areas and he never complains,” said Smith.
“I just liked what I was doing and I just liked the people I was working around,” said Hutchinson.
After two decades of service Hutchinson is hanging up his uniform. Co-workers say they'll miss his smiling face, but know he'll continue to touch even more lives in the years to come.
The school system held a retirement party to show their appreciation for his dedication.
