A local retired OB/GYN can't seem to spend enough time with babies and new parents. Dr.Jack Hirsch is back at Martha Jefferson Hospital. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, he's no longer delivering babies, but rather volunteering his time in the Birthing Center.
Dr. Jack Hirsch is no stranger when it comes to hospitals. In fact, he spent several decades delivering babies at the old Martha Jefferson Hospital in downtown Charlottesville.
Now he's back at the new building continuing to help new parents and babies.
“Since I have given up the actual practice of medicine that doesn't mean I have to give up the society of medicine,” said Dr. Jack Hirsch, MJH Volunteer.
A couple of days during the week, you can find Hirsch manning the front desk at the Birthing Center.
He guides visitors and calls new parents to announce their guests.
“I'm just continuing on what I did when I was practicing. It's work that has to get done and I don't mind doing it,” said Hirsch.
Although, Hirsch is on the other side of labor and delivery now, he says his work right around corner from the nursery is just as rewarding.
“I enjoy the people. I always have,” said Hirsch.
Colleagues, patients and guests enjoy him as well. They say even the shortest conversation with Hirsch is enough to brighten their day.
“I joke with people…when people look like they've been up all night…especially the husbands. I try to joke with them a little bit to make the experience a positive one,” said Hirsch.
Although, Hirsch has served the community for several years he's still willing to give even more time and says he wants to continue helping out as long as he's needed.
Over the years, Hirsch has delivered more than 5,200 babies. He kept track of every baby. He even wrote down every name, in a book. He now has three books full of names.
