Stephanie's Heroes: Feeding Greene Food Pantry

August 30, 2011

For this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell introduces two heroes who are doing their part to make sure people in Greene County are not going hungry.

Sixteen years ago, Carroll and Sandra Sullivan started a food pantry in Stanardsville. The program has grown and evolved into the brand new Feeding Greene Food Pantry.

"These are really tough times, I knew it was a need. I've always had a soft spot for the poor and the hungry and knew I didn't have any money to give them so I'm giving them my time," said Carroll Sullivan.

The Sullivan's work five days a week. Carroll sorts baked goods, frozen meat and canned vegetables, while Sandra oversees all the paper work like reports and records.

"It gives me a good feeling, as I see the need, I realize each day it's greater and greater and I just thank god that we have food that we can give the poor and hungry," said Sandra Sullivan. Some people would not have access to food without the pantry.

"It's unusual for us to have eggs. We had eggs last night to give out and one mother said oh my son will be so happy to see eggs and then it comes home to you. They can't afford to buy eggs," said Sandra.

The Sullivan's feed hundreds of families in a year, but they offer more than just free meals, they are also building relationships.

"I guess there is this wonderful camaraderie, with the volunteers and there is that sense of fulfillment, and we do all go home happy knowing what we've done," said Sandra.

The couple has helped to grow Feeding Greene into the organization it is today. They say they will keep at is as long as they are able to and for as long as it is needed.
