Stephanie's Heroes: Helping Locals Stay Cool in the Heat

June 13, 2011

While some people in Charlottesville enjoy their lunch break on the Downtown Mall or in their office, Steve McVey spends his hour outside in the heat.

Four times a week you can find McVey and his two coolers full of bottled water outside of a Charlottesville soup kitchen.

“We saw a need. There was nobody giving out water. Just long lines at these soup kitchens and the people were all thirsty. It needed to be done so we're able to do it,” said McVey, who handed out more than 2,300 bottles of water last year.

McVey hands out water free of charge, making sure the people in need are staying hydrated as the temperatures soar. What may seem like only a small gesture to McVey means so much more for the people who are now able to have something cold to drink.

“I've had many of them thank me and I thank them for taking the bottle of water,” he said.

Although, McVey doesn't call himself a hero, others in the community do; he says he's just doing what he's supposed to do.

“I don't do it to feel good I do it because it's needed," he explained. "These people need someone to be an advocate for them and need someone to provide them with the basics necessities of life that maybe they don't have another way of giving."

After passing out nearly 100 bottles of water McVey packs up his coolers to head back to work, but he'll return with more water and more encouraging words for the people who need it most.
