Stephanie's Heroes: Nicole Muller

March 14, 2011

While most high school seniors are busy thinking about prom and graduation, Nicole Muller spends her time trying to end hunger. From the shelves to the bins, this Western Albemarle High School senior is working to collect food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Charlottesville.

“It's amazing. I think it's awesome to give back and know that you're helping people that are close by and all over the country,” she said.

Since 2009, she has helped bring in more than 60,000 pounds of food. Thanks to a $10,000 donation, Muller's hoping to do even more in 2011.

The magazine USA Weekend recently selected Muller as one of ten winners of the National Make A Difference Award. Each recipient receives a $10,000 check to donate to a charity of his or her choice. Muller's donation is going to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Kevin Ruddle runs the BRAFB and says volunteers like Muller mean so much to his organization.

“She brings to the table something that we need very much, that's help from the community to do what we have to do,” he explained. “It takes volunteers like [Nicole] to come in and help us get day-to-day things done to bring awareness to the community and show other people that one person can make a difference.”

Nicole Muller believes she's doing just that, and she hopes to be an example to other teens while helping end hunger with each item collected.
