Stephanie's Heroes: Orange Co. Children's Toy Box

December 19, 2011

By the dozens the community is coming out to support the Orange County Children's Toy Box. They're filling bags full of gifts to make this holiday special for children and teens in need. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is recognizing the Harley Owners Group in Orange County and the helpers who are making this annual tradition possible.

The Harley Owners Group in Orange County is about more than just shiny motorcycles. Members along with high school organizations and the community come together once a year for the annual Orange County Children's Toy Box.

It provides presents for Orange County children and teens in need.

Volunteers work for hours walking through the line filling their bags with gifts for each child on their list.

"Nothing is more rewarding than helping a child. It's during the holiday season of giving. It's a season of hope...sharing and that's what we do," said Donna Waugh-Robison, Coordinator, Orange County Children's Toy Box.

Since 1991 the Harley Owners Group and the community have been making sure kids in Orange have presents to open for the holidays no matter how tough a financial situation may be at home.

"A lot of the people receiving help during the holidays. They're working. They're struggling they might be making their mortgage or their rent or they might be behind, but there's nothing left over for Christmas.

Although there are plenty of gifts to be found at the Orange County Children's Toy Box organizers say the program couldn't happen without dozens of volunteers they call heroes.

"Our community comes out in droves to support the members of our community they're all heroes. Everyone that helps this program whether they donate their money, a present or their time," said Waugh Robinson.

Over the years, this program has helped put thousands of gifts under the tree and lots of smiles on young faces.

Volunteers say giving children & teens a special memory during the holidays is what keeps them coming back year after year.

When the program started 20 years ago the Orange County Children's Toy Box provided gifts for 150 children and teens. This season they're helping nearly 700.

They collect toys and items throughout the year. If you would like to donate call Donna Waugh-Robinson at 540-672-5550.
