Stephanie's Heroes: Sisters Conquering Cancer

April 18, 2011

The women of Sisters Conquering Cancer are all too familiar with mammograms, tests and chemotherapy. Many are breast cancer survivors and others have loved ones who have had the disease.

“When you first hear the word cancer, the first thing that comes in your mind is death and it puts a fear in you, but you have to draw strength from where you don't think you have it,” said Sylvia Tyree.

Now they're using that strength and experience to help other African-American women dealing with breast cancer.

“Sometimes African-American women just don't talk about their cancer or the illness that they're going through. We want to focus on those women so they know that there are other women that can help them through this,” said Sheila Smith.

From making care packages for cancer patients to helping out at Emily Couric Cancer Center, Sisters Conquering Cancer is doing whatever they can to spread the word and offer support.

“Whatever we're asked to do we rally together whoever is available to consult with people, make public appearances to do outreach,” said Syd Dorsey.

“It's very important to help women that are going through that because sometimes they think that they're at their last end. We need to let them know there is life beyond breast cancer, beyond chemotherapy,” Tyree added.

These group members have taken the initiative to create a support system for women in need. For that, they are being called heroes.

“I think that's really the reason this whole group came together and that all of us are so committed to it. We know that we can make a difference literally in peoples lives,” said Dorsey.
