Stephanie's Heroes: The Thrift Connection

May 2, 2011

One area ministry is using a church run thrift store to help change lives. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell highlighted the work of Hazael Garay and the Women's Ministry at Iglesia Revoluzion in Charlottesville.

As a minister at Iglesia Revoluzion, Hazael Garay says her purpose in life is to help as many people as she can.

"I feel a connection I just feel like I want to help," said Garay. She and her church's Women's Ministry Program created a thrift store to help women and children in need.

"Every time, I sell a pair shoes, or a pot or a fork it makes me feel great knowing that part of that money is going to feed those children," said Garay. The store, called the Thrift Connection, helps orphaned children in places like Bolivia and Nicarugua have food and shelter.

Proceeds also go towards women in the community who have fallen on hard times.

"We find women that are maybe abandoned by their husbands or they find themselves in crisis situation and we want to help them not only spiritually, but we want to help them in a tangible way," said Garay.

The women at the Thrift Connection work to do everything they can to make a difference, whether it is helping women to find employment at a job fair, or giving them a skirt to wear to an interview.

"I know there's a lot of women out there that don't have support system and we want to come in and be that support system," said Garay.
