An area woman has dedicated nearly two decades to changing lives by helping children and families. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is featuring Naasira El-Abdullah's who has used her own life experiences to make a difference for people all around central Virginia.

Naasira El-Abdullah's work takes her many places, even her client's door step.

She's a family support worker for Jefferson Area CHiP, which is an organization that works to promote healthy homes and healthy kids.

“For me this gives me an opportunity to go out and share with the families and show them where resources are...directing them to find resources in the community that's there that can benefit their lives and the lives of their children,” said Naasira El-Abdullah's, Family Supporter Worker, Jefferson Area CHiP.

For example she connects people with social services, emergency food banks, doctors, therapists and whatever each family needs including lessons to help parents teach their kids.

During in-home visits El-Abdullah often monitors childhood development.

“We will talk about what she may be seeing her baby do now and I will give her some milestones, a list of things she should be looking out for if her baby is not already doing them,” said El-Abdullah.

El-Abdullah wasn't always the woman her clients and colleges see before them today. She was a teen mom, a victim of abuse and even forced to lay her son to rest and the young age of 22.

“For a long time I thought it was just about me then I decided that it was something that made me realize that there are lots of other people that their situations might be worse than mine. So, I decided instead of spending a lot of time being angry and wondering why things happened to me the way that they did I felt that I could channel that energy into helping other people.

Helping people is what she's done for the past 17 years and it's the reason that everyone around her calls her a hero.

As mentioned Naasira El-Abdullah is a part of Jefferson Area CHiP. On Tuesday October 11th the organization will present the first ever Imagine Awards.CHiP will recognize five individuals who have taken advantage of CHiPs which have helped them reach their potential.
