Safe Teen Drivers: How to Save on Insurance

When it is time for teenager to get behind the wheel, many parents look at what insurance policy they need. Although insurance can be expensive there are some ways to pay for a policy at a low price. The type of car a teen drives can affect how much a parent will have to pay.

"A four door mid size car is typically going to be the least expensive to insurer as compared to a two door sports car a convertible or a pick up truck or an SUV. So it is general rule there are always exceptions," said Mike Arnold, owner of the Mike Arnold Agency.

Teens can also get a low price if they do well in school. Depending on what the company offers, higher grades could mean lower prices.

"For instance with Nationwide, a student can get a good student discount with a G.P.A. of 3.5 or better or the top 10 percent of their class or on the deans list for a college student," said Arnold.

Arnold adds with Nationwide a teen must be listed on policy once they get their drivers permit. If a teen is not insured and get into a crash, there could be problems.

"There are serious legal ramifications for operating a vehicle that is uninsured as well as the owner of the vehicle to permit operation of an uninsured vehicle."

Arnold says parents should make sure their teen is safe on the road, they can limit the amount of passengers a teen has in their car. They should also make sure their teen is not distracted by their phone.

Parents can also check to see how their teen is driving. There are several options for devices that parents can place the device in their teen's car and go online to track their driving behavior.
