Safe Teen Drivers: Traffic Stops

Driving alone on an empty road can be dangerous, especially if your car breaks down or you are pulled over by an unmarked car miles from any home or business.

In the past three months, there have been two separate incidents of phony cops making traffic stops in Louisa County. Another incident occurred in February in Albemarle County just two miles from the Police Department building. In that incident police say a black SUV pulled over a woman. However, officers say when the driver of the SUV realized there was a second passenger in the vehicle, the SUV sped off.

"You hear about [these incidents] all over the country [they] can have tragic results, just by somebody out there impersonating one of us," said Corporal Sean Hackney of the Albemarle County Police Department.

Hackney says teens can be especially vulnerable when they get pulled over.

"They are thinking about a lot of other things than looking to see if this is a real police officer," said Hackney. Officers are still looking out for suspects in officer impersonation schemes.

"It's something we constantly look out for, and are prepared for," said Hackney. To protect yourself if you are pulled over, stay cautious but do not ignore the lights. Slow down and put your blinkers on so officers understand that you are not speeding off. Then call 911, the dispatcher will know where you are and if an actual officer is pulling you over.

Every officer is also required to carry an ID and a badge, which you can ask to see if you are pulled over.
