Experts say when the weather gets warm and summer around the corner it is a dangerous time for teenagers to be on the road.

“The month of May is the most dangerous month for driving,” said driving instructor, Richard Wharam.

In May of 2006 Nolan Jenkins, a lacrosse player at Albemarle High School, was killed when he lost control of his sports utility vehicle.

Wharam says during the month of May, young drivers are paying less attention to the roads and the warm weather plays a factor in distracting them.

“They are in a state of euphoria they are on cloud 9 because of they are graduating. School year is ending, they’ve gotten their exams back, they’ve gone to the prom with that very special person,” said Wharam.

Wharam also says the more friends teenagers have in the car, the more they are distracted and the risk for a crash increases. One teen passenger in a car doubles the risk of a fatal collision and three or more quadruple the chances.

“They get to horsing around and they forget the driving environment, they forget the road ahead and pretty soon you’ve got a crash,” said Wharam.

Driving instructors suggest parents have their teenagers sign a contract, agreeing not to text or drink when they begin driving.
