UVA Today: Partner Violence Conference

March 9, 2012

The University of Virginia held a conference focusing on violence against girls and women internationally. Speakers from different countries visited the school and discussed ways to prevent violence against women. They also spoke about how it is being addressed in their country. Nurses have been doing research on violence prevention and researchers spoke about their findings during the conference.

"We can speak up when we see our friends in unhealthy relationships, be support for our friends. We can call the domestic violence hot-line and get information and to let our friends know there are resources out there," said Associate Professor Dr. Kathryn Laughon.

Dr. Laughon mentioned people should look into warning signs of a domestic violent relationship. She says excessively controlling behavior, violence and sexual violence are some warning signs.
