What's Going Around: Patellar Tendinitis

July 23, 2012

In this week’s What’s Going Around, we’re focusing on Patellar Tendinitis otherwise known as “Jumper’s Knee.”

Doctor Phyllis Montellese of Spring Creek Family Medicine provided the medical information on this.

Symptoms of Patellar Tendinitis include knee pain and increased pain in your knees when going down stairs or after sitting down for a while.

Doctors say a history of knee injury is not necessary to get this condition and pain can happen gradually. Symptoms may last for months up to years if untreated.

Patellar Tendinitis can be seen in all ages and can be the primary cause of pain in younger patients with other knee problems. Dr. Montellese adds that Patellar Tendinitis is more common in women.

When it comes to treatment, Dr. Montellese recommends using an exercise program to strengthen your thigh muscles.

The best way to prevent Patellar Tendinitis is to keep your legs strong and flexible. Dr. Montellese adds that people should exercise regularly to prevent recurrences.
