What's Going Around: Viral Illness & Pityriasis Rosea

If you've noticed a skin rash or you have nausea and vomiting, it may be time to get to your doctor. In the first what's going around of the new year, we're focusing on viral illness and Pityriasis Rosea.

Nurse practitioner Cindy Napier of Buckingham Family Medicine says viral illness is going around. Symptoms include nausea, fever, vomiting and body aches. Napier says it's best treated with clear liquids, Tylenol, ibuprofen and rest.

Skin rashes are impacting more patients in Fluvanna County. Dr. Paige Nolte of Palmyra Medical Associates says Pityriasis Rosea is going around.
Symptoms include a skin rash which begins with a single lesion, followed in one or two weeks by a torso rash lasting about six weeks. Sometimes unusual lesions form on the race.

When it comes to treatment, Dr. Nolte says direct sunlight makes the lesions resolve quicker.
