This time last year, Blue Ridge head football coach Del Smith was just settling in the area and settling in to his new job leading Barons Football. He barely had a staff in place on the sidelines and little time to prepare for the 2008 season. It showed on the field. A 3-5 record with no post-season appearance for the Barons last year was unacceptable to Smith and is trying to make sure it never happens again.
This year, Smith held a mini-camp for his players. Despite most of the players being spread out across the country, a majority of them showed and believe in Smith and his football work ethic. The Barons are extremely confident in their abilities this season. With weapons like former Albemarle students Andre Roberts and Cameron Anderson, a slashing power running back in David Coe, and a very big offensive line, coach Smith has every right to be excited for the season ahead.
The Barons kickoff their season on September 12th at the Hargrave Military Academy.
