Albemarle County Supervisors voted to let residents harness the power of the wind. Thursday afternoon, supervisors voted in favor of allowing wind turbines for personal use.
It's a new option to help power your home and promote reneweable energy.
People who want to build a wind turbine must apply for a building permit and get the project approved based on the turbine's location and height.

Albemarle County is considering allowing wind turbines for personal use. For example, to generate electricity for one's home. The panel discussed the issue at length at Wednesday's public hearing, and decided to vote on the proposal at a scheduled meeting on Thursday.
The board supports the use of wind turbines. However, some supervisors want there to be strict regulations as they test the waters.
"It's a circumstance where there is a conflict in the various policies the county has," said Director of Community Development, Mark Graham. "There is an interest in promoting sustainable energy, but there is also an interest in protecting the natural beauty of the county."
Officials would not let turbines be used on mountains or in historical areas, which limits turbines to be used in rural areas of the county.
Noise level, height, and location on property were also issues.
