Lynchburg College plans to retrofit every building on campus to reduce energy and water use.
The conservation effort announced Thursday will cost more than $4.6 million. It includes overhauling heating and cooling systems and installing energy meters in dorms so students can see how much electricity they use.
Vice president of financial affairs Steve Bright says the project will reduce power use by at least one-third. Water use will be cut by more than 45 percent.
Bright says the college expects to save an estimated $583,000 annually in water and energy costs. The savings will be used to pay for the project.
