City Challenges 250 Homeowners to Cut Energy Costs

April 26, 2012

Charlottesville is honoring its 250th birthday by celebrating the past, while simultaneously planning for the future.

Thursday was the first day of the Energize250 Challenge. For the rest of the year, city officials want to engage 250 homeowners in taking action to make their homes more energy efficient.

"We just want to get people to start doing things and to really think about it instead of spending this anniversary year thinking about energy," said Kristel Riddervold, an environmental administrator with the city.

In partnership with the Local Energy Alliance Project (LEAP), the city is offering homeowners an energy review for just $25. Experts will visit your home and make suggestions on ways to save on energy costs.

"She gave us a plan for saving ten percent, all of which, with one exception, we can do ourselves. So actually, it's easier than I thought it would be," said Energize250 participant Laura Merricks.

The city hopes to have all 250 homes reach a ten percent overall gain in energy savings. To lean more about the initiative, click here.
