May is oncology nursing month, and more than 33 thousand registered nurses re-dedicate themselves to patient care, research and education in the field of oncology. Many of these nurses work directly with patients during their treatment of cancer. They are with them at their bedside while they deal with the extreme conditions of chemotherapy.
David Schneider, an oncology nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital explains what it is like to practice medicine in his profession. A typical day involves dealing with 4-6 patients, one of which may be a patient going through their treatment for the first time. For these special patients, the nurse will help educate, prepare for possible side effects and help in administering the treatment. An oncology nurse needs to be prepared and alert for changing conditions with their patients. This is all done with the up-most care and compassion, something Martha Jefferson Hospital champions throughout its corridors.
