To some patients, Martha Jefferson Hospital may seem more like an art gallery than your typical hospital. Employees are trying to make patients more comfortable and provide a calming atmosphere to help them feel better.

When you walk though the doors of the Martha Jefferson Hospital, one of the first things you will notice is all of the colorful art. More than 700 pieces are located in the hospital, they line the hallways and light up the lobby, adding a splash of color to treatment rooms.

"Research shows that art is very powerful and can really aid in the healing process," said Martha Hunter, the Director of Guest Services. "Our focus here was to create a wonderful healing environment not just with the art, but the views and the surroundings and warm colors."

Alex Arner, one patient at the hospital, says healing is his number one goal, but while he is in the hospital he also enjoys looking at the artwork.

"I think it's sort of uplifting. It sets this cheerful atmosphere in the hospital, it makes you happy," said Arner.

The artwork is starting to catch on with patients, many say it helps take their mind off of their illness and reminds them of happier times.

A majority of art in and outside of the hospital is local. Not only will you find new paintings in the building, you will also find quilts and sculptures on display.
