It's been a dream for years at Fluvanna County High School but this spring it will finally become reality. The Flucos will field boys and girls varsity lacrosse programs for the first time this spring.
"This could be an unbelievable opportunity and again, walking across campus here you notice that there's some athletes here that if they cross over into the game of lacrosse from football and basketball and wrestling, we could put a competitive program on the field fairly quickly," new boys lacrosse coach Rich Little said.
Lacrosse was only available at the club level for the last few years at Fluvanna, but thanks to fundraising efforts from the local community and a grant from the U.S. Lacrosse organization, the Flucos now have a lacrosse program and shiny new equipment, handed out Thursday evening at a ceremony in the school library.
"We'll have the privilege of a lot of teaching and hopefully the word will spread and Fluvanna will become a true lacrosse county," girls coach Jenny Payne said.
For the seniors at Fluvanna who have been waiting years for this opportunity, the time is now to be excited about the new challenge.
"It's definitely going to be hard our first year but there's a lot of young talent on this team," senior Bryan Werley said.
The Fluvanna boys officially begin practice Monday while the girls start on Tuesday.
