It has been eight years since UVa. fourth year student, Jennifer Leigh Wells lost her life to meningitis, but her memory lives on each year with the annual Moonlight Walk.

The 2-mile walk took place under the lights at the Monticello High School track.

Family members say the event is a celebration of Jennifer's life and an educational opportunity to promote meningitis awareness and prevention.

'100% of the proceeds go toward meningitis research in hope that one day there will be a vaccine for the strain b meningitis, which is what Jennifer died of, " said Cindy Payne, mother of Jennifer.

Over $9,000 was raised, going directly to a scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland, in California, who is working to find a vaccine for strain b.
