One hundred days have passed since the nationally publicized death of University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love. Now, with a new crop of students moving into off-grounds housing, CBS19 has learned that Love's apartment is no longer empty.
The 14th Street apartment was the scene of a brutal homicide in the early morning hours of May 3, during which 22-year-old Yeardley Love was allegedly killed at the hands of former boyfriend George Huguely.
Katelyn Krause helped four girls move into the apartment. She says they signed the lease before Love's death.
"It was just weird knowing what happened in that room to be inside it. There's no way I could ever be so inclined as to take that lease. However, they signed the lease before the incident, so I guess at that point you're locked into the contract," said Krause.
CBS19 spoke to a local real estate attorney to see if a landlord is required to disclose information about previous incidents that may have occurred at a property.
"There should be no obligation for a landlord to disclose that information to someone that they're leasing to," said attorney T.J. Adlous Jr.
CBS19 also contacted Woodard Properties, which operates the Camden Plaza Apartments on 14th Street, to find out if they gave the new tenants the option to opt out of the lease contract. However, Woodard did not return phone calls.
Krause admits that living in the apartment would make her uneasy.
"It's something that's going to be on your mind every night when you go to sleep. Just the thoughts of what happened in that room would keep me awake," she said.
