Virginia's controversial state climatologist has stepped down. Patrick Michaels has made waves on the topic of climate change saying that he had doubts about global warming.
The head of UVa's Department of Environmental Sciences says Michaels will stay on as a part time research professor on leave from the University.
The state climatologist's office provides information and conducts research on the impact of weather and climate on economic and ecological systems. Michaels had been in that job since 1980.
Michaels has taken large contributions for private research a move that has drawn criticism from top scientists and environmental advocates. He said he'll continue to work at the libertarian-conservative Cato Institute in Washington, where he works while on leave from UVa.
