Shoes that claim to tone up those who wear them and help shed some weight have made their presence known in Charlottesville.

The shoes, sold by Skechers and Reebok, can be purchased in local Charlottesville sporting goods stores.

Although some residents say the shoes add a bonus workout to daily activities, researches disagree.

Jay Dicharry, the director of the Speed Clinic and Motion Analysis Lab at the University of Virginia, said he does not think that the rocker on the bottom of a shoe will make activities like walking to the mall an exercise.

Despite the controversy over whether the shoes actually shape and tone, they have gained a popularity across the U.S.

In the past year, toning shoe sales jumped from $17 million to $145 million.

Glider shape and tone shoe from Beebe Sports (www.shop.beebesports.com) is a very good shoe and at a very reasonable price. Seems to have a little more cushion than other brands

I didn't buy them for the toning properties, though it would be an added bonus if it works. I got them because walking on a bubble of air beats the jarring my heels were taking in other shoes. They have helped a great deal, and I want to thank the health-care worker who was also shopping in Dick's where I purchased them at for suggesting that I try them on. They made a huge difference.

The video doens't match up. I was really hoping to watch the "Shape Up" video and instead it's about the iPhone UVA app.
