A Lexington sawmill operator has settled a federal lawsuit alleging the male owner sexually harassed female employees.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement with George C. Shumate Inc. Tuesday.
The company agreed to pay $60,000 to Monique Ingram and another female office worker who wasn't identified.
The commission sued the company in September 2009 in federal court in Lynchburg. Its complaint alleged that Ingram and other female employees were harassed from about November 2005 to at least January 2007.
According to the complaint, the alleged harassment included sexually explicit remarks and unwelcome touching. Ingram was fired in 2007 after she complained about the incidents.
