Charlottesville City Council has proposed regulations on business signs on the Downtown Mall.

The regulations are meant to help keep the space open while also creating some uniformity among the various businesses.

Vice Mayor, Holly Edwards noted "The purpose behind the regulations is to provide some continuity as to where the signs will be and to make sure that it's equitable for all our businesses and to make sure that it's safe for everyone that wants to navigate the mall."

The Vice Mayor added that its hard for those in wheelchairs or walkers to navigate around the signs.

The proposal calls for all signs to be within five feet of the business they endorse.

Amy Melville of Cville Arts says signs have helped her business to stand out from others. She hopes the new regulations will not cost her potential clients, "I think its made a real difference for us as a store because it does catch people's eyes. They come they stop they look at it and they're drawn into the store. Having to lose that I think would be very difficult for us."

So, signs cause problems for people with wheelchairs, and uniformity is good. You mean blocking sidewalks and in to the main mall with seating for restaurants isn't an obstruction, and is uniform. Is the mall now in high enough business demand that city council can afford to make it harder for new businesses to get recognized. If I want uniform blandness I go to commercial mall, not an active city. But someone please teach Urban Outfitters how hyphens work. :)

Let a beggar hold each of the signs and the problem is solved. Yes there are enough vagrants for each sign to have a human sign post.
