Albemarle County supervisors promoted Tom Foley to run the county government as its chief executive. Foley replaces his former boss, Bob Tucker, who is retiring at the end of the year.
Foley is the assistant county executive, a title he has held for the past 11 years. His elevation to the top spot was expected and came just a matter of days after Tucker announced his decision to retire.
"This was a troubling time, and we needed to have our best resources available to us right away without any chances for something to come about or for someone we didn't know as well. So we're very comfortable he will do an excellent job for us," said Ann Mallek, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.
A news release from the county said, "The appointment provides stability and continuity of leadership during challenging economic times and allows for a smooth and seamless transition with no familiarization period or learning curve required."
The release also states the decision wasn't reached quickly and that the supervisors have been weighing their options for some time since Tucker had made his plans to retire well known inside county government.
