The Albemarle County School Board heard from 13 candidates Wednesday night who want to fill the board's open seat.

The board held a special meeting at Monticello High School. Out of the 15 original candidates, two withdrew their names. One of the remaining 13 people will take the seat of outgoing board member Brian Wheeler, who announced his resignation back in August.

Each person had the floor for 10 minutes. Some spoke about improvements they would try to make in Albemarle County Schools, from increasing communication among board members to using more technology in the classroom.

"I think it's a great process because with 15 applicants, I'm sure it's difficult for the school board to come up with a final selection," said Martha Redinger, one of the applicants. "There are a lot of qualified people, I believe, who care a lot about public schools."

There were three mandatory questions to answer in the process, so each candidate spoke about improving education, funding for schools, and why each person wants to be on the school board.

The school board says even though two people withdrew, it's the most interest they've seen in a board position in quite some time.

On Thursday, the public will have a chance to share their thoughts on the candidates at the regular school board meeting, beginning at 8 p.m. Also at that meeting, the board will narrow down the field of candidates so interviews can begin on Monday.

The board is looking to fill Wheeler's seat by Sept. 20.
