The Virginia National Guard says that it has reached its recruitment goals for 2007 despite the strain of overseas deployments on volunteers.
According to the state Army Guard Lieutenant Colonel Paul Griffin, the Virginia Army National Guard reached 103% of its recruiting target for the 2007 federal fiscal year. The Army Guard exceeded its manpower goal of 7,475 soldiers for 2007 by 223 soldiers.
Major Mike Lovell says the Virginia Air National Guard was one person short of reaching its desired end-strength of 1,254 airmen, or 99.9% of its goal.
Across the country, the Pentagon says, the Army National Guard as a whole reached only 95 percent of its goal of recruiting 70,000 soldiers.
More than 2,200 Virginia Guard soldiers and airmen are currently on active duty.
