Virginia Special Olympic Athletes Bring Back Medals

All eight athletes from Virginia that participated in the Special Olympics in China brought back medals.

The eight athletes brought back 18 medals, seven gold medals, six silver medals, and five bronze medals.

Special Olympics Virginia spokeswoman Holly Claytor called the World Games "an awesome experience" for the participants. She says that nearly 8,000 athletes take part in Virginia Special Olympics events.

The eight Virginia athletes were part of the nearly 400-member American team that competed in the games that started October 2nd
and ended Thursday.

The medal winners were:
-Peter Zaino, Midlothian, swimming.
-Evelyn Aguirre, Fairfax, softball throw.
-Grace Anne Braxton, Fredericksburg, golf.
-Jon Fried, Crozet, tennis.
-Joey Goodrich, Pearisburg, track and field.
-Sterling Grooms, Winchester, weight lifting.
-Jennifer Mitchell, Alexandria, swimming.
-Melanie Norris, Virginia Beach, bowling.
