Sheriff's Deputy Killed Reporting To Accident

A Stafford County sheriff's deputy was killed in a single-car crash as he was following a rescue vehicle to an accident on Interstate 95.

The sheriff's office says 24-year-old Deputy Jason Edward Mooney lost control of his car Friday night when he hydroplaned and left the roadway. He was pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

Mooney joined the sheriff's department as a deputy in March of 2006.

He was a supply administration and operations clerk for the 4th Marine Division prior to joining the sheriff's department. He served with the Marine Corps in in Al-Asad, Iraq, for six months.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed yesterday.
