(AP) Officials say that a man accused of stabbing a 70-year-old woman to death in Richmond had not been taking his court ordered anti-psychotic medication.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday that an unnamed source also said 52-year-old Johnny Hughes was charged with attempted murder in the mid-1990s but was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Police say Hughes attacked Susanne Thompson with a large pocket knife as she walked her dog Saturday morning near the assisted living facility where she lived. Several people tried to help Thompson, who was stabbed multiple times, but she died on the sidewalk.
Hughes has been charged with murder.
