Police Arrest Man Suspected In Richmond Homicide

November 4, 2007

Richmond Police made an arrest Saturday within hours of finding a woman dead from a gunshot wound inside a Southside apartment.

John O. Cary, 27, of the 600 block of Rossmore Road is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in the death of 28-year-old Juanita Burnley of the 1600 block of Henrico Arms Street.

On Saturday around noon, Richmond Police responded to Rossmore Road in the St. John’s Wood Apartments for a report of a person down. When officers arrived, they found Burnley unresponsive inside an apartment. She was pronounced dead at the scene. It was apparent that Burnley was shot hours earlier.

Citizens advised Richmond Police of a relationship between Cary and Burnley. Cary was arrested without incident around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Jennie Scher Road. He is being held without bond in Richmond City Jail.

The initial investigation indicates Burnley’s murder, the city’s 47th to date, was the result of a domestic dispute.
