UPDATE: Family Holds Vigil for 5-year-old Girl who Died in Accident

May 15, 2011

The family of 5-year-old Alegna Wingfield, who died from injuries she sustained during an accident last Sunday, May 8 in North Garden, held a candlelight vigil for her Sunday night.

The ceremony was Sunday night in the parking lot across from the University of Virginia Medical Center parking garage.

The young girl's family mourned the tragic accident and the young life cut short. Her aunt, Latrice Jackson, recalls her favorite thing to do with her niece. "Fuss. Tease each other. You're not the boss, that was her thing. You're not the boss, and if someone else was being bossy then it was, someone else is not the boss."

Wingfield was seriously injured when she was struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of Toco Hill. Police say the automobile was traveling at low speeds on private property.

Wingfield sustained serious injuries and was air-lifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center where she remained in critical condition until she was pronounced dead on Friday, May 13.

While a cause has not been released, police say there are no pending charges relating to the incident.

The family has set up a fund through Bell Funeral Home to help pay for the funeral.
